Gastric Banding is the placement of a band around the stomach. According to Dr Behnaz Yazdanfar, Gastric banding is usually done with the application of a laproscope. Gastric banding can assist the patient with the achievement of longer lasting weight loss by reducing the volume of food that that can be: Taken in at any one meal, limiting the sensation of hunger, and retarding digestion.

The band bisects the stomach into a compact upper section above the band and a division below the gastric band, Dr Yazdanfar. This small pocket reduces the quantity of food that a patient can injest at any one time, and will cause a sense of fullness upon after injesting a small amount of food.
